When English luxury embraces electromobility
For its first update since its launch, the Bentley Bentayga offers more than just a new look. It is also beginning its transition to electric power with a surprising plug-in hybrid version.
5.13 metres long, 1.71 metres high, 2648 kg curb weight and 22-inch wheels. Bentley is pleased to announce the arrival of its first B.B. (Bentley Bentayga) hybrid. And this handsome new vehicle is ambitious: it seeks to combine the world of luxury and eco-driving without losing the brand’s identity.
After the initial excitement of discovering the luxurious interior, designed with elegant materials, the first dilemma arises. Should we simply push the accelerator pedal down to put the V6 Turbo of this B.B. to the test or should we succumb to the appeal of novelty by testing the electric driving range while cruising through the streets of Luxembourg City?
From the top of route d’Esch near Gasperich Bank via Boulevard Joseph II to the end of the Serra roundabout in Kirchberg, the SUV does not go unnoticed by passers-by but glides perfectly through the traffic in electric mode. However, you have to anticipate changing traffic lights bring the car to a halt at red lights. We were very close to the 40km range when the V6 Turbo took over at the Belgian border.
Including massage
No panic. The navigation system suggests that we should be able to make the journey to Cadzand on the Zelandic coast of Flanders on a single tank of fuel. For the record, the capacity of the petrol tank is 75 litres. With the cruise control on, it’s time to relax. The touch of a button on the console transforms the seats into a massager with several types of massages. From the cervical region to the lumbar area, all the muscles of the back are covered. This is the epitome of luxury.
The B.B. does not disappoint on the motorway. Until a British supercar driver comes along and politely challenges us for a few hundred metres. Suffice it to say that while the Bentayga has a lot to offer, its stoutness quickly takes its toll. It is not a sports car at heart. It likes its passengers to feel comfortable on board. A muted ambience, perfectly tuned air suspension and exemplary driveability are just a few of the characteristics that sum up this SUV that abounds with superlatives. Including when it comes to talking about its price. It starts at over €200,000 and an additional €30,000 to enjoy the fully equipped First Edition.
After these adventures between the Grand Duchy and the Zelandic coast, the Cadzand lighthouse appears on the horizon. It’s time to swap the road for wide expanses of fine sand.
