The international driving licence
What is an international driving licence and what is it used for? The international driving licence is a document that accompanies your national driving licence and allows you to drive abroad temporarily. It translates your licence into several languages and is recognised in many countries.
Do you need an international driving licence?
The Luxembourg driving licence is recognised by convention in all member states of the European Economic Area (EEA). Outside the EEA, some countries require the licence to be accompanied by an international driving licence, which is in fact a certified translation of the national driving licence.
How do I apply for an international permit?
ACL is authorised to issue this international permit on the spot to anyone who meets the following two conditions:
- be the holder of a driving licence issued by a member state of the EEA, i.e. the countries of the European Union as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
The administrative fee for drawing up the international permit is
- 16 € for ACL members
- 30 € for non-members
What documents do I need?
In order for the international permit to be issued, the applicant must go to one of our offices in Bertrange or Ingeldorf with:
- a valid driving licence issued by a member state of the EEA*, or a recent certified copy of the original
- a certificate of residence in Luxembourg (no more than 3 months old) which can be obtained from the local authority of the applicant’s place of residence;
- a recent passport-sized photograph.
The period of validity of the international permit depends on that of the national permit, but in no case may it exceed 3 years (1 year for Japan). When it expires, it must be replaced by a completely new permit.
