10 Tips before buying a new car

Published on 13/01/2025

With Autofestival just around the corner, here is some sound advice to guide your decision-making process

“The heart has reasons that reason itself cannot comprehend.” This saying remains true in many aspects of human behavior, though increasingly less so when it comes to buying a new car. Over recent years, rising prices and the growing complexity of automotive technologies have made purchasing a car more challenging. ACL is here to guide you in making the most of this year’s Autofestival.

From diesel to electric: new mobility trends in Luxembourg

In the past four years, the registration of electric vehicles—both hybrids and fully electric (PHEV/BEV)—has surged dramatically. By 2024, these technologies are expected to represent nearly 60% of all new car registrations in Luxembourg. Meanwhile, diesel vehicles have steadily lost ground, accounting for only 13% of registrations in 2024 compared to 36% in 2020.

The differences between various types of vehicles with electric components can be confusing and present challenges when selecting the right model for your driving style. Each powertrain type comes with its unique advantages and disadvantages, which ACL’s experts are more than happy to explain.

  1. Choosing the right powertrain
Petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric? SUVs, coupés, roadsters, city cars, or estates? With such a wide variety of options—many driven by marketing terms—it’s essential to be well-informed about the pros and cons of each technology and category to make the choice that best meets your needs.
  2. Select the right model with the right options
When purchasing a new car, ensure that the order form specifies the exact model along with all equipment and options. This minimizes any potential misunderstandings.
  3. Clarify the delivery date
Make sure the delivery date is specified as precisely as possible. Avoid vague terms like “by the end of the year,” and instead use specific phrasing such as “in December.” If no delivery date is mentioned in the sales contract, the dealer is required to deliver the car within 30 days of signing. Should there be a delay, the dealer must act in good faith and inform you promptly to find a mutually agreeable solution. Otherwise, you have the right to cancel the sale via registered letter.
  4. Agree on the trade-in price
When trading in your old vehicle, ensure that the agreed trade-in price is documented in the sales and trade-in contract. If delivery of the new car is delayed, your old vehicle may accumulate additional mileage, affecting its value. The contract should guarantee the original trade-in price.
  5. Understand fixed pricing terms
In the event of a delayed delivery, the price of your new car cannot exceed the amount stated in the sales contract. Although an indexation clause may be included, it must be clear and understandable.
  6. No right of withdrawal
Once the sales contract is signed, you cannot change your mind. Take your time before committing to a purchase. However, if the car was purchased online, European regulations grant a 14-day withdrawal period.
  7. Consult your bank
Before visiting dealerships, check your purchasing power or credit eligibility. Most banks offer online credit simulators. It’s also a good idea to consult your banker for personalized advice.
  8. Review private leasing terms
If opting for private leasing, carefully review the terms and conditions to avoid surprises. Seek clarification on any unclear clauses. Additionally, confirm whether the dealer adheres to specific standards for assessing wear and tear at the end of the lease, such as the Renta standard. Pay attention to mileage limits and inquire about additional costs per kilometer if you exceed the agreed usage.
  9. Test drive the car
Always take the car for a test drive to evaluate its comfort, handling, visibility, and performance. Ideally, replicate your daily commute and even park in your usual space to test the turning radius and maneuverability. The closer the test conditions are to your daily use, the easier it will be to compare vehicles.

By following these recommendations, you can approach your next car purchase with confidence and clarity. ACL is here to help every step of the way!
