Cupra Tavascan VZ Pack Adrénaline

Published on 18/12/2024

A bold, aerodynamic design

The Cupra Tavascan VZ, with its adrenalin and winter pack, offers 340 hp in 4-wheel drive. It redefines the codes of electric sports SUVs by combining performance, avant-garde design and cutting-edge technology.

The Tavascan, the first 100% electric, sporty SUV from the Spanish brand Cupra, creates a sensation at first glance with its bold, sculptural design. Following on from the success of the Born compact, this model confirms Cupra’s commitment to electric vehicles, combining striking aesthetics with technological innovation.

Its backlit grille, taut lines and new lighting signature, embodied by Matrix LED headlights in the shape of distinctive triangles, define an instantly recognisable visual identity. The rear is no exception, with the Cupra logo positioned at the centre of a strip of light linking two triangular lights, reinforcing its unique character.

Particular attention has been paid to aerodynamics to optimise performance and fuel efficiency. Air intakes on the front grille extend towards the bonnet, while a specially designed rear diffuser reduces drag. The result: controlled fuel consumption and maximised performance.

With a coefficient of drag (Cx) of 0.26, the Tavascan achieves respectable results, albeit slightly higher than those of models such as the Tesla Model Y (0.23) or the Porsche Macan (0.25). Nevertheless, this figure underlines the seriousness of the work carried out by Cupra, which combines assertive design and technical research to offer a driving experience that is both efficient and distinctive.

A powerful electric motor

Based on the MEB modular platform shared by its Volkswagen Group counterparts (ID.4, Enyaq, Q4 e-tron), the Tavascan VZ Adrenaline stands out for its performance and advanced architecture. This 100% electric SUV is equipped with a two-motor system, positioned on each axle, giving it all-wheel drive and optimum driving dynamics. At the front is an 80 kW (109 hp) induction motor and at the rear is a 210 kW (286 hp) permanent magnet synchronous motor. This duo develops a combined power of 250 kW (340 bhp) and instant torque of 545 Nm, enabling impressive acceleration.

Power is provided by a Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery with a usable capacity of 77 kWh (82 kWh gross), offering a range of almost 520 km according to the WLTP cycle (570 km on the Endurance version). Thanks to fast DC charging of up to 135 kW (which is in the middle of the range), 28 minutes is all it takes to go from 10 to 80% range, provided the battery is properly conditioned before charging. In alternating current (AC), an 11 kW charging point provides a full charge in 8 hours, ideal for night-time charging at home.

Winter pack: comfort even in extreme conditions

Thanks to the Adrenalin pack, the interior of the Tavascan is a modern technological cocoon, dominated by a T-shaped centre console and a dashboard adorned with a 15-inch touchscreen. Although the latter is a little too imposing, it is fluid and practical for managing navigation (with trip planner and automatic battery preconditioning), multimedia and vehicle settings. Compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly, it blends in well with the sleek interior. However, a larger meter than the current 5.3 inches and physical shortcuts for the climate control would have been appreciated, although the head-up display ensures perfect legibility.

The dashboard is enhanced by an LED strip that runs down to the front and rear door panels, creating a sporty and immersive atmosphere. Comfort is also on the agenda: our test model, equipped with the winter pack, features heated bucket seats at the front, covered in 50% recycled upholstery with copper accents and electric adjustment, a heated windscreen for optimum visibility, and above all a heat pump. The latter helps to maintain a good level of autonomy by minimising heating energy consumption in winter.

At the rear, passengers enjoy plenty of space, even with the front seats set back as far as possible. The absence of a central tunnel makes the middle seat usable, and the panoramic roof adds a feeling of space and light, ideal for relaxing on long journeys. Finally, the 540-litre boot, spread over two levels with extra space for cables, outweighs rivals such as the KIA EV6 and the Mustang Mach-e by 20 litres.

In terms of technology, the Tavascan shines with its comprehensive driver assistance system. It includes Travel Assist (driving assistant with trajectory correction and adaptive cruise control), Adaptive Cruise Control, a speed limiter and 360° cameras, ideal for manoeuvring in tight spaces. Silence, comfort and practicality make this vehicle an excellent companion, whether for everyday journeys or long-distance adventures.

Road holding: between sportiness and versatility

Thanks to its all-wheel drive and DCC-controlled suspension, the Tavascan VZ Adrenaline offers exceptional roadholding, even on slippery surfaces. Power is delivered to the wheels smoothly, without jerking or spinning. The DCC suspension automatically adjusts the firmness of the dampers according to the driving mode selected via the left-hand satellite on the steering wheel: Cupra, Performance, Individual, Traction, Range or Comfort. The right-hand satellite switches directly to Cupra mode.

In Traction mode, the rear engine is deactivated, and the vehicle runs solely on the front engine. Range mode optimises the car’s range by slightly limiting power, which saves extra kilometres. Cupra mode, on the other hand, uses all the power available. The throttle response is immediate, propelling the driver to the back of the seat, and regeneration on deceleration is also very strong, which can seem brutal and unsettling when driving. Sport mode offers a gentler but just as responsive alternative, while the much-appreciated Comfort mode favours gentle but still very powerful driving comfort. The Tavascan effectively absorbs the roughness of the road and has excellent sound insulation (no external noise – engine or road noise – disturbs the passenger compartment), as does the Sennheiser audio system (11 speakers and a subwoofer).

Weighing in at 2,359 kg, the Tavascan manages to deliver an agile, well-balanced ride. However, the weight is still noticeable during emergency braking, when it is necessary to press firmly on the pedal, which is fitted with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. This weight also has an impact on energy consumption. During our winter test, with snow tyres and active heating, consumption didn’t fall below 21 kWh/100 km, well above the figures announced by the manufacturer. Fortunately, the generous capacity of the battery limits the frequency of recharges.

When it comes to regenerative braking, there are two options: steering wheel-mounted paddles or B mode (one-pedal drive), which optimises regenerative braking.

Prices and availability
