The key: being well prepared

It’s becoming increasingly common for people to take their four-legged friends with them on trips, especially during the summer holidays. Whether you’re travelling by car, train or plane, it’s essential to prepare your trip properly.

Travelling with your pets during the summer holidays can be a rewarding experience if you are well prepared. Make sure your pet is in good health, comply with transport rules and take care of its comfort and safety. With the right preparation, you can all make the most of your holiday.

Preparations

Before you leave, it’s important to make an appointment with your vet for a full check-up. Make sure your pet is in good health, up to date with vaccinations and has a pet passport. Also pack a suitcase for your pet, including its usual food, medicines, favourite toys and a first-aid kit.

In the car

When travelling by car, your pet’s safety must be a priority. Use a safety harness, cage or safety net to protect your pet in the event of sudden braking. ACL offers cages for hire at Clubmobil.

Take regular breaks to allow your pet to stretch its legs, drink and relieve itself. Make sure your pet is always properly hydrated and fed. To reduce stress, take along his toys and/or favourite blanket.

By train or bus

The rules for transporting pets by train or bus vary from company to company. In general, small animals can travel free of charge or for a small supplement, as long as they are in a cage or carrier bag. Large dogs may require an additional ticket and must be muzzled. Check with the airline before travelling.

At your destination

Once you arrive at your destination, take the time to help your pet adapt to its new surroundings. Let him explore the area gradually and make sure he has access to fresh water and his usual food. Find out where pets are welcome and enjoy your holiday with your faithful friend.

What if I’m going by plane?

Travelling by plane with a pet requires special preparation. Each airline has its own policies in this area. Let’s take two specific cases with Luxair and TAP Portugal.

Luxair:

  • Animals accepted in the cabin: Dogs and cats up to 8 kg (including carry-on bag).
  • Cost: Approximately €50 per flight.
  • Conditions: The animal must be carried in an approved bag (maximum dimensions: 45 x 30 x 23 cm). Only one animal per passenger is permitted. Reservations must be made in advance and are subject to availability.

TAP Portugal :

  • Animals accepted in the cabin: Dogs and cats up to 8 kg (including carry-on bag).
  • Cost: Between €35 and €70 depending on the destination.
  • Conditions: The animal must be carried in an approved bag (maximum dimensions: 40 x 33 x 17 cm). Reservations must be made in advance. Only a limited number of pets are accepted in the cabin per flight, so early booking is recommended.

Make sure your pet is comfortable in its carry-on bag and has enough room to turn around and lie down. Place a blanket or item of clothing with your scent on it to reassure it.

What about low-cost airlines? As a general rule, they do not accept pets on board their flights. Only certified and trained assistance dogs are accepted on board. They can travel free of charge in the cabin with their owner.
