Low emission zones in Belgium
In Belgium, so-called “Low Emission Zones” (LEZ) are currently in force in the cities of Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. There are plans to extend these low emission zones to other locations. Vehicles registered abroad must be registered online. This registration is free of charge and will be confirmed by e-mail.
Attention
Some websites offer the purchase of stickers that are neither necessary nor valid for entry into the low emission zone.
Motorbikes may enter these zones without having to be registered.
Unlike in France and Germany, compliance with this obligation is not checked by affixing a sticker, but by video surveillance cameras that scan the licence plates to check vehicles for compliance.
LEZ Antwerp
Since 1 February 2017, the city centre of Antwerp and part of the left bank have been a Low Emission Zone (LEZ), in which access is restricted to vehicles with the highest pollutant emissions.
On the website www.slimnaarantwerpen.be you can check whether your vehicle is authorised to enter this zone and register it online. Registration must take place no later than the day after entering the low emission zone.
Registration in Antwerp is also valid in Ghent, but not in Brussels.
If the registration criteria are not met, a day pass can be purchased up to 12 times a year, which grants access to the low emission zone for one day, regardless of the vehicle used. The cost of this day pass is €35.
LEZ Brussels
Since January 2018, the Brussels Low Emission Zone has been in operation 24 hours a day and covers the entire Brussels-Capital Region, with the exception of the ring road (R0).
The registration form and more information about the LEZ in Brussels, including exceptions such as historic vehicles registered abroad, can be found on LEZ.brussels. Motorbikes are not subject to the environmental zone regulations.
Please note that registration in Brussels does not apply to Antwerp or Ghent.
For vehicles that do not fulfil the registration criteria, up to 24 day passes can be purchased per year, which grant access to the low emission zone for one day, regardless of the vehicle used. The cost of a day pass is €35.
Good Move Brussels - In 2020, the City of Brussels launched the Good Move project, which aims to improve the safety and well-being of residents in the city's various neighbourhoods.
The initiative aims to improve the quality of life by introducing 30 km/h zones, pedestrian zones and one-way streets, among other things.
More informationLEZ Ghent
The city centre, which is bordered by the R40, is an environmental zone in Ghent. Registration must take place no later than the day after entering this low emission zone.
For diesel vehicles that fulfil the Euro 4 standard and some special vehicles, a permit can be obtained that allows limited entry into the Ghent low emission zone.
If a vehicle is registered in Ghent, this authorisation is also valid in Antwerp, but not in Brussels.
